Lake District hoteliers expand portfolio with Cumberland support

A Lake District hospitality business has acquired its second property in less than a month with support from The Cumberland.

Hayley and Steve Hallsworth have purchased Lymestone in Grange-over-Sands, adding to their growing accommodation portfolio after entering the sector in 2022 with the acquisition of Jerichos in Windermere.

The historic property, which dates back to the 1870s, offers boutique-style accommodation with self-contained suites, keyless entry and automated guest communication.

The acquisition gives the couple a broader presence across the Lake District, with Lymestone providing access to central locations as well as Morecambe Bay and nearby Cartmel.

The purchase followed an auction process that required completion within 30 working days. The Cumberland supported the transaction through its existing relationship with the Hallsworths, having previously worked with them on the purchase of Jerichos.

Steve Hallsworth says: “We had a very specific timeframe to work to, and The Cumberland delivered everything we needed and more. Completing in less than a month was incredible.

“We already had a strong relationship with our relationship manager, Georgie McRoberts, so there was a real level of trust from the outset. They understood what we were trying to achieve and made the whole process feel straightforward and seamless.”

Before entering hospitality, Hayley worked in education across primary, secondary and university settings, while Steve built a career in events and exhibitions.

The couple said their experience at Jerichos gave them the confidence to expand, with Lymestone allowing them to add a more flexible accommodation model that combines boutique hotel features with the independence of self-service stays.

Selected suites include spa baths, walk-in showers and private infrared saunas, while dog-friendly options are also available.

Georgie McRoberts, commercial relationship manager at The Cumberland, adds: “We have a strong relationship with Hayley and Steve and completely bought in to their vision for how they wanted to expand their business. It was fantastic to help them in doing this in such a short timeframe.

“The acquisition of Lymestone is a great example of how a focus on developing relationships and a proactive approach can support customers to move quickly when the right opportunity comes along.

“We’re thrilled to work with them again and help them expand their portfolio.”
