HSBC UK has highlighted the challenges small businesses face in promoting themselves and accessing growth opportunities after announcing the winners of a nationwide SME competition designed to raise their profile.
Three businesses have been selected as winners of the bank’s Small Business Brand Ambassador Competition, gaining the opportunity to work with sporting figures Dame Kelly Holmes and Brian O’Driscoll as brand ambassadors for their businesses.
The initiative attracted around 400 entries from across the UK and was open to businesses employing fewer than 20 people.
HSBC UK said the competition was launched following research showing many small firms struggle to market themselves effectively. According to the bank’s findings, 38% of SME owners say they lack the time or resources needed to reach new customers.
WINNING BUSINESSES
The three winning businesses are The Canerow Company, a hair extension retailer based in Braintree, Essex; LA-Pop, an artisan gelato café in Birmingham; and Blossoms and Blooms Floral Studio, a sustainable florist in Cumbria.
Each of the businesses has filmed a promotional advertisement alongside Holmes and O’Driscoll to help raise awareness of their brands and reach new customers.

Tom Wood, Head of Business Banking at HSBC UK, says: “Small businesses can face challenges trying to reach new customers. Our competition has given these businesses the sort of opportunity usually reserved for major brands.
“With nearly 400 entries, narrowing it down to just three winners was incredibly difficult. The quality and resilience on display was amazing.
“Each winner is at a different stage of their journey – reflecting the diversity of the UK’s small business community. At HSBC UK, we’re proud to champion growth at every stage, whether a firm is just starting out or building on an already established foundation.”
SUPPORTING SMALLER FIRMS
HSBC says the initiative forms part of a wider programme aimed at supporting smaller firms. In July 2025 the bank introduced a no-monthly-fee Small Business Banking Account and continues to offer free digital banking and access to business specialists.
It also runs the HSBC Small Business Growth Programme, which provides training, events and business advice aimed at helping entrepreneurs develop and scale their businesses.
The bank says initiatives such as the competition are designed to give smaller firms greater visibility and access to the tools needed to support long-term growth.
