A Darlington wool and yarn retailer is expanding its offer after its new owner secured a five-figure Start Up Loan to take over and grow the business.
Pretty Knits Wool Shop, based in Darlington, has secured funding through the Start Up Loans programme with support from delivery partner the Business Enterprise Fund (BEF).
The business is owned by Hannah Hazledine-Herd, who took over the shop after initially joining as an employee. During her first five months, she worked closely with customers, advising on yarns, knitting patterns and haberdashery supplies, before the opportunity arose to purchase the business.
Without external finance, Hannah said acquiring the shop and investing in its future would not have been possible. With the backing of a five-figure Start Up Loan, she was able to complete the purchase and begin expanding the business.
The funding has been used to invest in additional stock, update machinery, promote the shop to new customers and broaden the range of services available.
It has also strengthened the shop’s partnership with Lovely Laundry Ltd, enabling an enhanced laundry offering alongside its core craft retail business.
FURTHER FOOTFALL
Since securing the loan, Pretty Knits Wool Shop has seen improved revenues and increased footfall, allowing further reinvestment as the business continues to grow. The expanded product range and services have helped establish the shop as a destination for both craft enthusiasts and local residents.
Hazledine-Herd says: “Without the Start Up Loan, I wouldn’t have been able to take over the business and grow it as I have. The funding has allowed me to offer more services, attract new customers and build a successful business.
“The whole experience has been quick, easy and incredibly supportive. Amber from the Business Enterprise Fund team was great to work with.”
Amber Kershaw, investment manager at BEF, adds: “Hannah’s passion for Pretty Knits Wool Shop was clear from the start, and we’re thrilled to have been able to support her growth.
“The loan played a key role in helping her take over the business and expand her offerings, leading to greater success and community engagement.”
Cat Smith, senior network manager at the British Business Bank, says: “We’re proud to have played a part in Hannah’s entrepreneurial journey, demonstrating how the right support at the right time can unlock real potential.
“She is helping Pretty Knits Wool Shop grow even further as a much-loved local business and strengthen the wider community. I look forward to seeing what is next for her.”
